Updated October 2026

Quick answer: There is no single "Blue Cross Blue Shield" dental timely filing limit. Each Blue plan (and each dental administrator it uses) sets its own limit, and the published dental limits we verified for 2026 range from 180 days (Blue Cross NC) to 24 months (BCBS Michigan commercial and BCBS FEP Dental). Many plans also set separate, shorter windows for secondary claims, timely-filing reconsiderations and appeals. Limits vary by plan, state and contract, so verify in your agreement or portal (or the plan's current provider manual) before relying on any figure here.

For the plan-level medical/dental overview, see our BCBS timely filing hub and the BCBS payer page.

Note on Rhode Island: BCBSRI's separate (non-dental-specific) 2024 timely filing payment policy states 365 days from date of service. The 2026 dental manual says 12 months. Treat the dental manual as the dental reference, and check your agreement if the two differ.

FEP BlueDental: two different products, two different deadlines

Federal patients often carry two Blue dental benefits, and the deadline depends on which one pays:

  1. BCBS FEP Dental (FEDVIP). Claims and any requested documentation are due within 24 months of the date of service (2026 brochure; member FAQ). The patient's FEHB/PSHB medical coverage is always primary (provider guide). FEP medical claims transfer automatically to BCBS FEP Dental; if the medical plan is a different carrier, include its EOB (2026 coverage summary).
  2. FEP Service Benefit Plan dental (FEP Blue medical). Claims must be submitted by December 31 of the year after the service (fepblue.org). Blue Cross NC reminds providers that FEP Blue Dental claims pay only after the FEP Blue Medical claim is processed (BCBSNC notice).

If the medical carrier has no embedded dental benefit, the FEP Dental provider guide says to submit directly to BCBS FEP Dental showing a $0 primary payment. Pre-treatment estimates and orthodontic requests can go straight to BCBS FEP Dental (provider guide). Paper claims go to BCBS FEP Dental, P.O. Box 75, Minneapolis, MN 55440-0075 (2026 summary).

FEP Dental disputed claims:

  • Ask in writing for reconsideration within 60 days of the decision. The plan responds within 30 days.
  • If you disagree with the reconsideration, request a second review within 60 days.
  • After that, the case can go to an independent third party mutually agreed by the plan and OPM, whose decision is binding. Under FEDVIP, OPM itself does not review disputed claims.
  • Appeals go to BCBS FEP Dental Claims Appeals, P.O. Box 551, Minneapolis, MN 55440-0551 (disputed claims section).
  • Provider-submitted appeals require a signed patient consent form (provider guide).

Corrected claims and appeals: what plans publish

  • CareFirst treats a corrected claim as a replacement claim, not an inquiry or appeal. Submit it electronically (837D) with "corrected claim" in the remarks, or on a paper ADA 2019 form. Allow 30 days for reprocessing (CareFirst Ch. 4).
  • BCBS Michigan: if a claim older than 24 months was submitted on time but never resolved, submit an appeal with documentation of the reason for the delay (BCBSM manual).
  • BCBS Tennessee says the 277CA acknowledgment serves as proof of timely filing for electronic claims (BCBST manual). Tennessee's Medicare Advantage dental (Network M) is administered by Dental Benefit Providers and has its own corrected-claim address (BCBST Network M QRG, eff. Jan 1, 2026).
  • Blue Shield of California states that corrected claims must be received within the timely filing period in your contract (Blue Shield CA).

Step-by-step: confirm and meet a Blue plan's dental deadline

  1. Identify the plan and administrator. Read the ID card prefix, plan name and claims address. Many Blues use a dental administrator, for example DNoA in IL/TX, DentaQuest for some BCBSM functions, or United Concordia for BCBSRI. The administrator's manual may govern.
  2. Pull the current dental manual or agreement. Use the table above as a starting point, then confirm the edition date.
  3. Determine primary vs. secondary. Secondary windows can be much shorter (for example, 60 days at BCBST) and may run from the primary EOB date.
  4. Submit electronically and keep acceptance reports. Save 999/277CA or clearinghouse acceptance reports as proof of timely filing.
  5. Calendar the follow-up windows for reconsideration, corrected-claim and appeal deadlines from the date on the EOB or rejection notice.
  6. For late claims, appeal with proof. Proof includes clearinghouse reports, prior-carrier denial letters, or evidence of when insurance information was received.

Documentation checklist

  • Member ID, group number and plan/administrator name from the current ID card
  • Date of service (completion date for multi-visit procedures, where the plan uses it)
  • Primary carrier EOB for secondary claims (FEP Dental: medical-plan EOB)
  • Clearinghouse acceptance or 277CA report showing the original submission date
  • Original claim number, for corrected or replacement claims
  • Radiographs, narratives and perio charting per the plan's attachment rules
  • Signed patient consent or authorized-representative form when appealing for the member

FAQ

What is the BCBS dental timely filing limit in 2026?

It depends on the plan. Verified 2026 sources show 180 days (Blue Cross NC), six months (BCBST commercial, general rule), 12 months (BCBSRI dental), 365 days (CareFirst), and 24 months (BCBSM commercial and BCBS FEP Dental). Check your agreement.

What is the timely filing limit for FEP BlueDental?

For BCBS FEP Dental (FEDVIP), it is 24 months from the date of service. For dental benefits under the FEP Service Benefit Plan (FEP Blue medical), it is December 31 of the year after the service.

Does the timely filing clock restart for a corrected claim?

Not as a rule. Blue Shield of California, for example, requires corrected claims within the contract's timely filing period. Submit corrections as replacement claims as early as possible.

Where do I find the limit for BCBS Illinois or Texas dental?

Dental Network of America does not publish it openly; its FAQ directs providers to request the Administrative Guide.
